Autumn Dusk - Polymer Clay Color Recipes

Autumn Dusk Color Palette Fall 2022

Color mixing is growing on me! I'm starting to figure out more effective methods when mixing. Here are a few tips that help me -

1. START WITH A FEW MAIN COLORS

Three polymer clay slabs on tile with depth guide and rolling pin next to it.

I begin color mixing by picking one or two colors I want to be in the palette. For this palette, I started with yellows and purples.

2. USE SMALL PARTS WHEN MIXING

I start by rolling out my clay slabs to a consistent thickness. Then I lay them on clay tiles and use a small circle cutter to cut out several circles from each color. I began with Sculpey canary, turnip, and igloo for this one.
Small parts allow for minimal "waste" (clay bits will always be used in my studio)! You can use the same recipe twice but switch the amount of white/black you add to the clay for a different tint or shade.

3. WRITE EVERYTHING DOWN

I am a forgetful human. Too often, I have created the perfect color, and I'm never able to recreate it. My clay samples go on a piece of paper, where I write the recipe next to it!
